Creating an application password (WordPress & ShowIt)

The username-and-application-password pair that connects your WordPress or ShowIt site to TPB — how to create it in under a minute.

An application password is a special password WordPress creates for tools it trusts — a random string that lets The Photographers' Blogger publish to your site without ever using your real login. You can revoke it whenever you like, and creating one takes about a minute.

Warning

Connecting a ShowIt site requires the "Showit & Advanced Blog" plan (an active Advanced Blog subscription). The Basic Starter Blog plan does not support this connection.

Before you start

  • Your site's WordPress admin address — usually yoursite.com/wp-admin (take your normal web address and add /wp-admin to the end).
  • A WordPress user account on that site with admin (or publishing) rights.

Warning

Never use your Showit dashboard login here. ShowIt sites run on WordPress underneath — the username and application password come from your site's WordPress profile settings, not from Showit.

Create the application password

  1. Sign in to your website's WordPress admin (yoursite.com/wp-admin).
  2. Go to Users → Profile.
  3. Scroll down to the "Application Passwords" section.
  4. In the name field, type something you'll recognize — for example “TPB”.
  5. Click "Add New Application Password".
  6. Copy the generated password immediately. It is shown only once and can't be viewed again later.

ShowIt: same steps

ShowIt sites run on WordPress, so you create the password in exactly the same place — your site's WordPress admin, Users → Profile → Application Passwords. Nothing about the process is different for ShowIt.

Note

The credentials you enter to connect your website are always your username and application password created in the above step — never your Showit or Wordpress email and password. Showit itself is never involved in this step.

Use it to connect

With the password copied, connecting in TPB takes seconds:

  1. Open Connections in the sidebar and click + Add Website.
  2. Choose your platform: WordPress or ShowIt.
  3. Enter your site URL.
  4. Click Manual setup (advanced).
  5. Enter the username and the application password you just created.

During connection, an approval window for your own site may open automatically. If it doesn't open — or the connection fails — simply use the manual application password method above; it always works.

If you lose the password

  • Application passwords can't be retrieved after creation — WordPress only shows them once.
  • Revoke the password (see below) and create a fresh one the same way.
  • Reconnect in TPB with the new password — your drafts, topics, and settings are untouched.

Revoke or manage passwords

  1. In your WordPress admin, go to Users → Profile.
  2. Scroll to "Application Passwords" — every application password you've created is listed there by name.
  3. Click "Revoke" next to The Photographers' Blogger, or "Revoke all application passwords" to clear the lot.

Note

Revoking TPB's application password stops publishing until you reconnect with a fresh one. Nothing else is affected.

Tip

Name each application password after the tool that uses it — “TPB” is easy to spot when you review the list later.
